Choosing the correct hat style for your face shape and knowing the correct hat size are key to finding the perfect hat or cap. Lock & Co, is known as the Home of Hats, and our hatters and stylists are on hand to help you select the best head piece for you. If you visit our shop at No. 6 St James’s Street, one of our hatters and stylists can provide a dedicated one-on-one shopping experience.

If you are shopping online visit our hat sizing page where you can take our questionnaire to help you find the best selection of hats and caps for the hat type you are looking for.

Understanding Your Face Shape

What hat suits my face shape is the ideal question to answer and one of the most important factors in finding the perfect hat style for you. Different hat styles complement different face shapes:

  1. Hats for oval faces: Almost any hat style works well for oval faces, so feel free to experiment with different shapes and sizes to match your hat to your outfit or mood.
  2. Hats for long faces: Ideal hats for long faces balance proportions and add width to the face. Wide-brimmed hats, such as sun hats or Panama hats create this balance well.
  3. Hats for round faces:Hats for round face shapes will include wide-brimmed hats like a fedora, wide-brim trilby, or a fuller shaped cap, like our Sandwich or Muirfield caps, to add definition and elongate your sillouette.
  4. Hats for square faces:Wear hats with rounded or curved edges to soften strong angles and create flattering, soft shapes. Try one of our Bakerboy caps such as the Tremelo or Whitebridge or the Louisiana Fedora.
  5. Hats for heart-shaped faces:Heart-shaped faces typically look stunning in hats with medium brims. Most hat styles work well, so experiment with everything from boaters, berets and baseball caps to a fedora, cloche, or homburg.

Choosing the Right Size

Your perfect hat deserves the perfect fit. A hat that doesn’t fit well can be uncomfortable and unflattering. Use our simple measuring tape method to ensure that you find the ideal hat size, or you can watch our video here:

  1. Use a flexible tape measure. Place the tape measure around your head positioned mid-forehead and just above the ears.
  2. Take note of the measurements in centimetres or inches.
  3. Note the measurement and use our hat sizing chart to find your hat size.

Exploring Different Styles

Sometimes, the key to finding the right hat is simply trying different styles.

Here are six classic styles to consider:

1: Fairbanks Collection

One of our Lock & Co. signature styles, the Fairbanks, carries a rich piece of our history. The hat is named after the legendary actor Douglas Fairbanks JR., who once resided at No. 6 St James's, the site of Lock & Co.'s shop. This connection to our famous former resident is a testament to our enduring legacy, and we proudly named one of our hat styles - the Fairbanks - in his honour.

The Fairbanks is the perfect hat for anyone. Being well proportioned – the brim is not too wide; the crown is not too high – it will fit almost anyone well, making it an ideal style if you are looking for your first hat. Whether you are looking for a felt trilby for cooler climes or our Panama for sunnier climes, our Fairbanks range has the perfect hat to suit your style and needs.

5: Bucket Hats

Bucket hat fashion looks like it is here to stay. A fusion of contemporary streetwear and luxury design, inject some cool into your wardrobe. This relaxed style has become a mainstay for all year round.

Personalising Your Hat

If you’ve found a hat that fits well but still feels like it’s missing something, consider personalising it. Ask our hatters and stylists what options are available for items purchased in our shop, not online. We have a small selection of mono- and multi-tone band and bows that we can attach to your hat. You can also supply your own band for the hat if you prefer. There is a charge for personalising the band and bow on your hat.

Confidence is Key

Sometimes, people feel they don’t look good in hats because they’re not used to seeing themselves in one. Give yourself time to adjust and remember that if there is a hat you love, chances are it will suit you. Confidence is the most important guide when choosing and wearing a hat.

By understanding your face shape, choosing the right size and style, and wearing your hat with confidence, you can find the perfect hat style for you.
